My Own Success Story
I was bulimic for years, and have been yo-yoing between 110 and 195 lbs. I have
tried almost every diet, including the
‘prison diet’: water and bread, but I found out that eating the way I was brought up and
being more active, is the only way.
After Princess Diana died, my son talked to me about losing me, and what that
would mean to him. He urged me to get well, but it was actually my mom, who
said to me in a sad tone, that she probably didn
’t teach me how to eat healthy.
When I thought about that, I realized that when I grew up, I ate well, and because of the complete nutrition and an active
lifestyle - horse riding, biking
to school, etc - I was not overweight. I didn’t even think about weight loss or diets.
That came later, but now, with the help of my husband John, my son Michael, my
parents and my dog Trigger, I enjoy
eating healthy, being active and living life to the fullest. More detailed

No New Trend
With the guidelines in this chapter, I do not invent a new trend, or discover
the magic secret
weight loss. Through the centuries, it has been well known that a healthy
balance between food intake and activity output
, is the key:
- Aristotle (384 - 323 BC) created the ‘Golden Mean’ philosophy, which
advocated moderation.
- Plato (427 - 347 BC) educated the balance of the ‘soul’, which means a balance
between spirit, appetite and reason. To Plato knowledge was the key to make
the right decisions. At his school the ‘Academy’, he educated young men in
art, science, dance, and physical education. When we follow the same
guidelines, and educate ourselves about our own balance, about our own
possibilities, and project that into our modern environment, we will be able to
enjoy the health benefits of our new lifestyle.
As a child and teenager, I had to bike to school, to the stables, to town, to my
friend
’s house if I wanted to go anywhere. In modern US biking is more than a physical
challenge; it is dangerous, due to lack of bike-paths like we have in Holland,
as you can see in the photo on the right.
So we have to create other ways to get more physical activities into our and our
childrens
’ daily life. The following pages will show you a few examples of what we can add to our daily chores, like
aerobic house cleaning,
‘push-ups-while-you-work’, and ‘lunges-while-doing-the-laundry’. It is fun & easy!
